Why is my house so cold?
I cant figure it out, i have double glazing and central heating. But after i turn the heaters off, the heat just escapes so quickly.Last winter, i invested in thermal lined curtains and wall cavity insulation which made a tiny bit of difference. I took it one step further and decided to put that plastic shrink wrap stuff on my windows and use a haidryer to make it airtight, this also worked a little, but when the temperature dropped around december/january, the house became freeeeeezing. Im pretty sure its my poor quality double glazing thats causing the issue. I cant afford to get new double glazing at the moment, does anybody have any suggestions as to what i can do, im considering purchasing some 3mm thick clear perspex to place over my window frame to act like an extra barrier, do you think this will solve the problem?? i have carpet, i use my heating, i use draft excluders under the door…ive literally done everything so please help me out here if you have any clue as to what i could do. Winter is comming and i dont wanna feel cold, i hate feeling cold!
yes roof is insulated, but thanks for thinking. Nope im not sensitive to heat, the thermometer doesnt lie. once heater turns off, the heat doesnt lastvery long at all…possibly 30 minutes
You say loft is insulated, but how well,is it new thick type or old thin? As thick as poss is best.
On a windy day look for draughts and seal if poss, apart from that wrap up,how did our parents manage before c.heating?

How can I stop smoke from getting into my bedroom?
I have recently had to move in with my boyfriend’s grandad and will be here for about 2 months. I have asthma, although I haven’t really suffered with it since I was little. Now I am living here, the fact that my bf’s grandad smokes is becoming a real nightmare. I have to take my emergency inhaler (blue one) twice a day. My breathing is horrible and it just irritates me. It’s getting on my bf’s nerves that I’m just miserable all the time but obviously he doesn’t understand what it’s like. Every night now I have woken up with a tight chest and coughing. I know it’s going to affect my job so I need to sort something. I think the main problem is that our bedroom is directly above the living room where my bf’s grandad smokes. It’s his house so really can’t expect him to change routine and ask him to smoke elsewhere, especially because he’s elderly. We have rolled up a towel to use a draft excluder on the door, we have bought a febreeze plug in and keep windows open at all times. Still, none of that is helping get rid of/block the smoke. Help! I’m worried because I can really feel myself getting really ill ![]()
You have to create a negative air pressure in your room, meaning you need a fan outside your room blowing air outside the house, perhaps the fan over the stove will work. Then open your window and make sure all other windows except where the fan is blowing OUT are closed. Obviously if the fan could be in the old man’s room blowing out that would be ideal.
I’m having trouble making my sliding door light-proof for my dark room. any ideas or suggestions?
Im not sure how to make it light tight because the edges done stay in one place, heard draught excluders might be good??
please help!
Use aluminum tin foil. Tape it on while you need it dark and then untape and save it for when you want light. Guaranteed this will make your dark room real real dark. I use tin foil on several of my windows where the sun hits certain times of the day. This really keeps the temperature down and is also inexpensive.
help with poorly insulated flat?
I moved in to my upstairs downstairs council flat about 4 months ago and it is freezing! I turn the heating right up to 30 and it is still cold but the pipes are roasting hot? I’m spending about £80 on gas and still need to wrap myself up in 2 blankets just to get a heat Iv tried closing all the doors, draft excluders but it is still really cold do you think the council would insulate my building? As I am paying all this money for gas and not getting any heat in the flat
This is the second time I have put this question up since some immature girl said I was on the ‘dole’ and stealing tax payers money, just to clarify I work 40 hours a week and pay all my bills myself!!! just because I live in a council house doesn’t mean I don’t work!
Call the council in to check your heating,it looks like the radiators are needing to have air bled from them, no matter the council are responsible for the heating system and they should make sure it is working ok for you.
how to stop cigarette smoke spreading into other rooms?
My brother smokes a lot in his bedroom and it absolutely stinks, He smokes those dirty roll-ups. Basically we can’t stop him so what can I do to stop the smell travelling about the house from his room? Are there any really heavy duty draft excluders to make his door airtight?
please help!!
You can get one of those duty draft thingys you’re talking about ![]()
I dont’ know what country you’re from though..

And then an air purifier. My grandma smokes A LOT. And she uses one in her bedroom and you can’t smell it anywhere else.
Fitting draught exclusion to a door or window
Between 10-20% of heat loss in a home is through draughts in windows and doors. Reducing this heat loss improves the comfort in your home, and reduces your fuel bills and carbon footprint.
This video shows how easy it is to draught proof a door or window using self adhesive draught excluder strips.

Draft excluders and gas fires?
There is a significant draft that comes under my living room door from the hall.
I want to fit a draft excluder to stop it.
Will this effect the fresh air supply to the gas fire in the living room? causing problems with carbon monoxide.
Fitting a draft excluder will be fine, if you want to be extra safe though you can either fit a draft excluder with the air grills in (although that defeats the purpose of fitting one) or you could fit in a carbon monoxide detector (the more suitable and safer option)
How To Install An Exterior Door Draught Excluder – Step by Step Video
There are a few videos on youtube that show how to fit an exterior door draught excluder and I just wanted to give a quick overview of what’s available.
Starting with one of my favourites, AskTheBuilder gives tonnes of useful tips and good camera work: –
This one is a simple introductory video which is just 1:22 long, yet comes up top in the results: -
At the time of writing it has around 2,300 views and has been up for 15 months – therefore it is averaging around 5 views per day.
A video with a medium amount of detail is this one, which shows a quick overview of how to fit draught proofing on a front door. It has a few good tips like looking for daylight to see if there is a gap for draughts.
