What’s the best way to draught proof stained glass windows?
I have just moved from a 13 yr old house to a 1930′s built house. We fell in love with the 4 stained glass windows, but they are in good condition but abit cold.
I really want something we can do ourselves .Any ideas?
Do what a lot of churches do… put an outer window of clear glass and that will keep the stained glass from letting in drafts… like a storm window.
advice regarding draft proofing self adhesive strip?
hi, ive recently moved to a new aparment and even tho it has double glazed windows they havent seemed to be fitted in properly as i can feel draughts coming in and even the window cutains move when there is a strong wind.. i have been advised by the maintainence man to get self adhesive foam to fix the problem as he feels the ladlord wil not spend money to fix the problem.. im not sure wht i to get.. the can variety or the tape variety also there is no BandQ or home base near my house any other hardware shops tht carry this product? the cracks in the window sill are quite wide (a pound coin can easily fit in sideways)
wht do i do?
thanks for the tip abt the paper strips scaryang.. ive done it til i can go out and get tht foam thingie from th hardware store..
Hi, u can use a piece of foam from a cushion or pillow, just cut it into thin strips & push it into the gaps around the windows, this will do the trick until u can get the proper stuff from the hardware store, the only problem with this though is that every time u open the window it will fall out, so either use the foam from a pillow & just don’t open the window or leave it until u get the proper stuff,
tightly folded pieces of newspaper can also be used as a temporary fix, fold it tightly into long strips & push it into the gaps just like you would do with the foam, hope this helps a bit!
Are wooden shutters effective at draught proofing?
My metal double glassed windows are draughty and can’t think how to draught proof them. I like the look of wooden shutters but I was wondering if they will be efficient keeping the draught away. I am open to other solutions too.
They do a good job. Even better would be to brick up the windows, no problems with draughts then.
Weather proofing windows?
I bought some weather proofing strips for my windows because they don’t close tightly and they let drafts in. My question is: once I have applied the weather proofing strips, can I still use the windows (open them), or do they need to stay shut afterward?
Thanks for the help!
I assume they are old wooden windows, although the only difference between them and pvc ones is that the weather strip may not stick to the pvc so you may need additional glue.
The weather strip is sticky on one side and you normally stick it to the frame – once applied you should be able to open/close the window as normal.
Pretty choccy box towns -v- Energy Conservation?
I live in a housing association property which I have done the utmost to insulate so as to reduce the amount of energy used as per green living practices allow.
The only other option left for me now is to have double glazing fitted as all other mods have been carried out i.e. condensing boiler/draught-proofing/loft insulation/energy saving light bulbs etc.etc.
However after a request to my landlord to fit sympathetic double glazed sash units I find that this major energy saving effort that we can make is denied us as it would spoil the look of the town!!!
Yet all council house properties in my immediate locale have been converted to save energy and ‘spruce up’ the properties.
I really hope that the changes in planning laws due out soon will accommodate provisos for situation such as this and allow us to argue our case without landlords being able to hide behind the skirts of outdated petty officialdom allowing them (in essence) to neglect their responsibilities.

Which method saves the most energy?
Between: Cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, double glazing, draught proofing, and insulation on hot water tank, which method saves the most energy? Why
I’d say loft (attic) insulation and cavity wall insulation probably tie for first, and you would really need to know a bit more about the house to say for sure which would give you the better savings (how big is your attic? Does it already have any insulation? What about your walls?)
Draught proofing is much cheaper and should be done anyway, all it really involves is putting up some weather stripping on your doors and windows. Most hot water tanks are insulated already, but again this could probably be improved for under $50.
Getting double-paned windows would be a middle of the road investment, as it could be rather costly (cheaper if you can do it yourself) and give your respectable savings.
Also, with anything you do, check with your utility company first–they may help you pay for major upgrades.
